Language is communication. Infants and toddlers use gestures and sounds to communicate. Slowly as language skills develop children learn to talk and express verbal and written language. There are a few activities listed to help develop your child's language skills.

Infancy
  • Talk to baby
  • Sing to baby
  • encourage the babbling sounds baby makes (see video on right)

Toddlerhood

  • Encourage your child to "use our words" when gesturing to things
  • When talking to your child hold up an object and say its name and ask the child to repeat the name back to you
  • Give the child opportunities to speak by asking questions about an activity, book or other experience you shared with him

Adolescents
  • Encourage your child to spend time reading
  • Assign your child writing assignments like "tell em a story about this picture (see picture below)
  • Communicate with your child! Have them tell you about their day, get them talking.

Early Childhood

  • set up "play dates" with other children so that your child can learn to communicate with his or her peers
  • Read to your child and point to the words as you read
  • ask your child to tell you a story and draw a picture about it
  • Ask you child to tell you about an event that occured in their life (see video to the left)

Middle Childhood

  • Have child write a story about what their life would be like if they had a super power
  • label Lego blocks with words and have your child "build" sentences and stories (see picture below)
  • encourage your child to read aloud to you
